Why night: what the circadian science of body skin actually says about when to exfoliate
"Apply at night, your skin repairs while you sleep." It is the most repeated line in body care, and it is only half right. The real reasons to put a resurfacing acid on the body after dark are more precise, and more useful.
You apply a glycolic acid body lotion at night for two evidence-backed reasons, and neither is the popular one. First, skin permeability is measurably higher in the evening and overnight, so a leave-on acid is absorbed more effectively then. Second, glycolic acid raises the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet light, so night keeps the active away from sun exposure. The idea that skin simply "repairs while you sleep" is an oversimplification: in humans the fastest cell proliferation is actually during the day, and barrier recovery in the late evening is slower, not faster, which is exactly why a night formula should be buffered and barrier-supported rather than aggressive.
Search "when to use glycolic acid on your body" and you will get the same answer everywhere: use it at night, because that is when skin repairs itself. It is repeated so often it has the texture of settled fact. The trouble is that the biology it points to is more interesting, and slightly different, than the slogan suggests. The skin does keep time. It runs on a circadian clock, like the rest of the body. But what that clock actually does across a twenty-four hour day is not quite the bedtime-repair story we have been sold, and understanding the real version changes how you should think about an overnight body treatment.
This matters more for the body than the face, because body skin is where leave-on acids do their slow, structural work on rough texture, keratosis pilaris and the look of strawberry legs. Getting the timing right is part of getting the result right. So it is worth setting the record straight with what the human evidence genuinely shows.
The clock is real. The bedtime-repair story is loose.
Skin is not a passive covering that switches to "repair mode" at lights-out. It carries its own peripheral circadian clock, running inside keratinocytes independently of the brain's master pacemaker. In the epidermis, that clock gates when cells divide and how vulnerable they are to ultraviolet damage across the day.3 So far, so consistent with the slogan.
Here is where it diverges. The most-cited experiments on when skin cells divide were done in nocturnal mice, whose active phase is the opposite of ours. In those animals, cell division in the skin peaks at night. In diurnal humans the phase is reversed: epidermal proliferation runs higher during the day, not overnight.3 The clean line "your skin cells regenerate while you sleep" borrows a finding from a mouse and quietly flips its meaning. It is the kind of claim that sounds authoritative and does not survive contact with the primary literature.
None of that makes night the wrong time to apply an acid. It just means the reasons are different, and better, than the ones usually given.
Reason one: your skin is more permeable at night
The single most useful circadian fact for a leave-on treatment concerns the barrier, not cell division. When researchers measured skin function every two hours across a full day in healthy volunteers, they found a genuine daily rhythm in the barrier: transepidermal water loss, the rate at which water escapes through the skin, was lowest in the morning and peaked in the evening, rising from around 9 up to roughly 36 grams per square metre per hour.1 In plain terms, the skin's barrier is at its most permeable in the evening and overnight.
For an active you want to absorb, that is the window. A more permeable barrier means a topically applied ingredient meets less resistance getting in.1 A glycolic acid lotion applied at night is working with the skin's own rhythm rather than against it. This is the mechanistic reason night application often simply feels more effective, and it has nothing to do with sleep-time repair.
Reason two: glycolic acid and the sun do not mix, and night removes the conflict
Glycolic acid works by loosening the corneodesmosomes, the protein rivets that hold dead surface cells together, so the outermost layer sheds more evenly.4 A freshly resurfaced surface is, briefly, a more sun-sensitive one. Glycolic acid measurably increases the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet light while it is active, which is why daytime sun protection on treated skin is not optional. Applying at night sidesteps the conflict entirely. The acid does its resurfacing through the hours you are nowhere near ultraviolet light, and by morning the most reactive phase has passed. There is a deeper layer to this too: the epidermis's own defences against UV-induced DNA damage are themselves clock-controlled.3 Timing exfoliation away from sun exposure is not fussiness. It is respecting a rhythm the skin already runs.
The catch that most night-routine advice ignores
Here is the part that turns this from trivia into formulation logic. If skin is more permeable in the evening, it is also, in a sense, less defended. And barrier repair does not conveniently speed up to compensate. When researchers deliberately disrupted the barrier and measured how fast it recovered at different hours, recovery was significantly slower in the late evening, between roughly 8 and 11pm, than at other times of day.2
Put the three findings together and a clear picture emerges. At night the skin lets more in, defends slightly less, and repairs its barrier more slowly. That is a wonderful window for delivering an active and a poor moment to be careless with one.
